Carnivore
In the early seventies there were no quality restaurants in Mombasa, and Kenyan born Chris Seex, who was managing a coastal resort hotel at the time, was determined to correct this. One of his ambitions was to create the finest seafood and meats restaurant in Africa. With little financial and moral support he designed and built the Tamarind Group in Mombasa, Kenya, which in turn gave birth to the Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi – Kenya’s capital.
While the menu is a blend of the best of French, Asian and African cuisines, and the Tamarind’s specialty is seafood, the Carnivore’s speciality (as you can tell by the name) is meat. All you can eat, full variety of meat. As for seafood, the Prawns Piri Piri, Chilli Crab and Lobster have earned the Tamarind restaurant worldwide fame and rave reviews from publications such as Gourmet, the London Times and the Herald Tribune.
Personal service, original presentation and attention to detail has developed the Tamarind Group’s reputation as one of the finest restaurants in Africa, and achieved the ambition of the founder.

Abou El Sid
Once upon a time, somewhere in Fatimid Cairo, during the rule of the Ottoman Empire, there was a poor, kind and unfortunate man. He was famous for his hospitality generosity and most importantly his legendary cooking. His home welcomed his friends and family at all times, despite his humble status. People talked a lot about his magnanimous nature and he was known as “the master” – Al‐Sayyed Abou el Sid.
Abou el Sid was famous for his exquisite Egyptian meals that had various delicacies such as Foul with Tahina Sauce, Koshari, Stuffed Pigeon with Rice, Molokheya with Rabbits. Eventually, he compiled his recipes in a book and hid it in a safe place. Centuries later, Abou el Sid’s book was found, and turned into a source of inspiration for an authentic Egyptian restaurant named after “the master”, Abou el Sid. This book is a commemoration of Abou el Sid’s work presenting its readers with genuine and authentic Egyptian cuisine.

D6 District Six Eatery
Home cooked Cape Malay-style curry is what keeps patrons coming back and regulars calling D6 their “second home” in Johannesburg, South Africa. The restaurant Creating mildly hot yet rich, spicy curries is the main preoccupation of chef-owner and waiter, Grace Fourie. She has tweaked and personalized each of the dishes to perfection.
As a result, the lamb curry (the most popular dish here) is fall-off-the-bone sumptuous, served with two generous bowls of steaming rice. Sambals include a sweet and sour sauce, a refreshing cucumber salad and beetroot to offset and complement the rich flavours of the lamb.
Other specials include tripe curry, sourced (as a favour) by Famous Brands for the restaurant, waterblommetjie bredie (which is a seasonal offering and also contains lamb, apple and potatoes) and boboties served in quantities fit for a very hungry giant. Only if you’re ordering the main meal to share – or already have plans to enjoy leftovers later – should you order the flavoursome Malay samoosas as starters.
Then perhaps you’d also have space for the milktert and warm, freshly made koe’susters (two per serving) as an after-dinner treat to be enjoyed their strong cup of coffee. The pumpkin fritters (two in a portion) also come highly recommended, the recipe for which has been published by a national newspaper – and mounted as a talking point alongside family photographs and glitzy Cape Carnival costumes.
