Living in a house with seven or more adult, robust housemates that are in proud possession of unhealthily healthy appetites makes catering something akin to a herculean task. Within twenty minutes of fetching new groceries for the house, the kitchen cabinets and fridge are usually empty again.

What we resorted to was to fill the fridge with beans, peas and maize to ensure an abundance of githeri. Githeri is a mixture of maize and beans, boiled first and then stewed with onions, tomatoes, peas, potatoes and even meat.
