This week we would like you to take a journey with us to the paradise Islands of Sao Tome and Principe.
These islands don’t get a lot of press, despite having some of the most beautiful beaches and landscapes on earth. The islands are made up of up of two major volcanic islands surrounded by eight small islets, of which 6 are inhabited, just off the West African coast. Sao Tome and Principe are well known for their bountiful cocoa plantations. Cocoa plant was taken from Brazil to Principe and Sao Tomé for the first time around 1822. The Islands used to be one of the largest exporters of Cocoa in the world, however more recently the decision was made to value quality over quantity; some of the best dark chocolate now comes from Sao Tome and Principe. Sao Tome by Bike
Explore the Island and the city of Sao Tome by bike. The Islands have a very rich cultural history. The island was used significantly during the slave trade and was colonised by the Portuguese. There are numerous cultural performances and festivals that happen throughout the year portraying this rich history; the struggle against slavery and the fight for independence by the people, including Auto de Floripes, which is performed by everyone on Principe Island, which dates back to the 16th century.
