The ever so captivating “I Wear African” Runway and award show took place at the African Vibes Magazine 5th Anniversary Event, on the 1st of May Hollywood with the event being televised and broadcast exclusively by Afrotainment on May 7th on their DISH Network Channel 751.
Kenyan designer Wawi Amasha behind Mami Afrika Designs, a brand featuring clothing jewellery and wearable art brought the East African Khanga to the “I Wear African” Runway. Amasha’s designs reflect the celebration of life with the use of vibrant colors inspired by the Motherland, warming the heart at a glance. Every item is handcrafted with love, totally unique and never exactly duplicated.
Also, present was Ugandan Designer, Solome Katongole of the label, Solome.Solome Katongole was born in Uganda and raised in Columbia, MD. Solome has a bachelors of science in Biology. She honed her skills by designing for and participating in fashion shows. Her Ugandan culture has also helped to influence her creativity in making garments. In establishing her career she went to London where she interned with Yemi Osunkoya, the great designer behind the Kosibah label. On her return she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a professional designer. Solome is a graduate of the renown Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, in Los Angeles where she majored in Fashion Design. She is inspired by color and nature, also her passion infused with her Ugandan culture has influenced her ability to design clothes that are chic, sophisticated, and sexy. She explore art with fabrics to create garments that are comfortable and make a statement. Solome is for every woman; shy, confident, loves color, fashion forward, or with a youthful spirit. Solome loves to dance and travel to warm areas wearing bright and soft colors and prints translating color and dance and a sense of feel into fashion giving her customers the freedom to define their own style.
According to Belle Niba, African Vibes Magazine Editor In Chief, “It is my hope that our efforts as African media to showcase positive Africa will only continue to gain momentum with every new initiative and the relationships we develop along the way.”
