Cape Verde is an archipelago of 10 volcanic islands located in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of West Africa, near The Gambia and Mauritania.
The Island was previously colonised by the Portuguese; it gained independence in 1975 and formally become the Republic of Cabo Verde. The official language is Portuguese but almost all Cape Verdeans speak Kriolu, a portuguese based Creole. The population is very diverse in terms of ethnicity because of its historical background as a trading post for the region.
The main island is Santiago which plays host to the country’s capital and main airport- Praia, with Sal, Boa Vista and Fogo catering mainly to tourists and visitors. Cape Verde is the perfect holiday destination; with its eclectic mix of landscapes and cultures, the country caters to every holidaymaker.
If it’s trekking you are after then the Sao Nicolau is the place for you. Hike to Monte Gordo, the highest point on the island for a breath-taking view of green valleys and tropical plantations, before finishing up in Riberia Brava for a lovely meal inspired by the countries Afro-portuguese roots.
Unbelievably Cape Verde is not only home to luscious green valleys but a desert as well. Located on the island of Boa Vista, you can ride buggies on Sand dunes in the morning and head off to the beach for a spot of Windsurfing in the afternoon. Cape Verde is truly unrivalled when it comes to the diversity of things to do when on holiday there.
The Island of Sal also offers a very special treat for visitors and tourists alike, such as the saltpans at Pedra de Lume; the breathtaking saltmines used to be a major source of revenue for the island nation but now stand as stunning reminders of the islands past. Like the dead sea, visitors can bathe in the saltpans before washing up and enjoying some typical Cape Verdean fare- cachupa rica – a slow-cooked stew with maize, vegetables, beans and fish.
Whatever time of year it is, whatever you are looking for in a holiday – Cape Verde has it and more. For more information on how to plan a holiday on one of the 10 islands, as well as flights and other essential travel information please check out Firstchoice holidays’ link.
