Sinfully serene.
That’s my opinion of this place, this tropical archipelago and the oldest of the world’s Swahili settlements. In Lamu, everything follows the town’s own rhythm. It is a medieval stone town, surrounded by rolling dunes and endless beaches, where tiny villages nestle among coconut and mango plantations and lateen sailed dhows ply the waters.
The town sprouted in the fourteenth century, and has since been through a myriad of occupational influences; from Portuguese to Turkish to Omani Arabs. Much of the old town remains untouched by time. Would you believe it, there are no cars in the entire town. None of that urban nonsense here!
The people of Lamu have a strong tradition, and they respect their past. It is also a Muslim town, thus with all the modesty and customs upheld by culture. Regardless, they are warm and accommodating. They share Lamu’s secrets with you.
Lamu hypnotizes, and that is no joke!
