Ethiopia has one of the richest cultures in the world. The country lies in Eastern Africa, north of Kenya. Over the years it has managed to preserve its ancient Amharic language, its own calendar, and its music, dress, architecture and food. The country is also the center of various cultures and religions. Orthodox Jews, Christians, Muslims and Rastafarians share Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is held in high esteem because it is the only African country never colonized, managing to ward off Italian invasion in the famous Battle of Adowa. The African Union headquarters is located in the capital, Adis Ababa. The capital also has the museum that holds one of the oldest hominids in the world, “Lucy”. Apart from the aforementioned historic facts about Ethiopia, the country is simply beautiful, with its scenic landscape, perfect weather and friendly citizens. There are numerous places to visit in Ethiopia. We offer some for your consideration.
1. AXUM (AKSUM) – Central Tigray Region
Axum is one of the oldest cities in Africa and home to the ancient Aksumite Empire. Although the once powerful empire is now in ruins, you will find some of the best relics and artifacts within. This kingdom was once one of the four kingdoms of the world! It was also home to the famous Queen of Sheba whose ruined palace and bathing pool can still be found. It’s rumored that this city is the location of the Ark of the Covenant mentioned in the bible, making Axum a tourist destination for believers.
2. BAHAR DAR
Bahar Dar or Bahir Dar, is Ethiopia’s largest city and and a big tourist attraction for Lake Tana and the Blue Nile. The Lake Tana is the source of the Blue Nile, which is a tributary of the River Nile. The scenic Blue Nile Falls (Tisisat Falls) are also located in Bahar Dar. Some of the oldest monasteries can be found in the many islands here (note that some of them are closed to women). Bahar Dar is also known for its palm tree lined streets.
3. HARAR
The walled city of Harar, or “City of Saints”, is considered the 4th most holy city for Muslims. Besides the city walls, tourists are attracted to Harar for its mosques and shrines, as well as the opportunity to see an ancient breed of horses. A night attraction is the feeding of spotted hyenas at two locations.
4. GONDAR
Gondar has the remains of numerous castles. If you have never seen a real castle then this would be a good place to begin your tour of Ethiopia. Gondar’s group of castles spectacular in their unique architecture. The city was founded by Emperor Fasilidas in 1635 and once stood as Ethiopia’s capital. At the time it was the center of commerce due to its central location. Evidence of the past Italian occupation is reflected in the city’s buildings as well.
5. LALIBELA
Lalibela is designed like a second Jerusalem. It is home to an array of churches carved out of stone probably in the 12th Century, and some have been dated back to the 10th century. One of them is the famous St.Georges Cathedral. There are also a variety of monasteries in the region. Lalibela is referred to as the “Eighth wonder of the world”. The “Bathing Palace of Emperor Fasilidas” is located here and used for the annual Timket or Epiphany Celebrations.
6. SIMIEN MOUNTAINS
The Simien Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The breathtaking mountains have a unique shape and form, and are the fourth highest peak in the continent. You can also visit the national park surrounding them to see wildlife and scenery. This park has over 50 species of birds, the unique Gelada Baboon and the Simien Fox.
7. OMO VALLEY
Omo Valley inhabitants are the indigenous people of Ethiopia who have managed to keep their culture intact. They have not been affected or influenced by outside life.
8. SOF OMAR CAVE
Sof Omar is an important Islamic Shrine named after Sheikh Sof Omar, who took refuge there many centuries ago. It has one of the most spectacular underground cave systems in the world, formed when the Wabi River changed its course and carved out a new channel through the limestone foothills.
